MSLBA Educational Resources (MSLBA ER) sponsors the leading alcohol awareness server training program in the State of Maryland – The MSLBA ER TAMŪ, Techniques of Alcohol ManagementŪ Program

MSLBA ER TAMŪ is as an educational program designed by licensees for both "on and off" premise establishments. MSLBA ER TAMŪ focuses on the varying effects of alcohol on individuals, and the law(s) and liabilities associated with the sale of alcohol, with emphasis on proper procedures for verifying the legal age of patrons. MSLBA membership qualifies licensees and their employees for discount registration fees for MSLBA ER TAMŪ training.

Generally, license holders of on-premise & off-premise retail alcohol beverage establishments are required to maintain at least one licensee or designated employee who is currently certified in an approved alcohol awareness training program.

In Caroline, Cecil, Charles, Frederick, Harford, Howard, Kent, Montgomery, Queen Anne’s, Washington, Wicomico & Worcester Counties: A certified license holder or certified employee(s) designated by the license holder is/are required to be present during the hours in which alcohol may be sold (see state law and local rules and regulations for specific details in each jurisdiction1).

Certification must be renewed every four years to remain current.

Failure to have a certified representative may result in license renewal delays, as well as fines, suspensions or even revocation of the retail alcohol beverage license.

To obtain specific information regarding alcohol awareness training requirements that apply to your establishment, see the following references:
  • Alcoholic Beverages Article (MD Ann. Code art. AB) § 3-504 entitled Alcohol awareness program
  • Alcoholic Beverages Article (MD Ann. Code art. AB) subsections that apply to the city or county where your establishment is located and to your establishment's class of alcohol license
  • Local Rules and Regulations or Code published by the alcohol licensing board/commissioners for the city or county where your establishment is located


MSLBA Educational Resources (MSLBA ER) offers the TAM®, Techniques of Alcohol Management®, program. The MSLBA ER TAM® program is the leading alcohol awareness training program in Maryland and has been approved by the Comptroller for meeting the requirements of the alcohol awareness training law. Local MSLBA ER TAM® seminars are available to meet your needs. The current schedule and registration form is published in the monthly Beverage Journal and on the web at—then click “Server Training”. In addition, MSLBA ER offers discounts for groups and for in-house seminars.

MSLBA ER provides a TAM® certificate and card for successful completion of their seminar and if needed, can provide persons currently certified through MSLBA ER with duplicate certification papers. If you have any questions, need a duplicate TAM® certificate, or would like additional information about group discounts or in-house TAM® seminars, please contact the MSLBA ER office.
